This photo of Sadko (published in the french Borzoi Club magazine in 2001) comes from a collection from the Beernaerts family archives which Françoise Vandenbussche and Philippe Duponcheel were able to obtain and which they were kind enough to pass on to me.
They told me about Sadko :
‘In these archives we find a photo of Sadko with his complete pedigree over two generations. It is probably KIEFF SADKO from Prince Galitzin's that Mrs Heller mentions in her book ‘Inter European Borzoi III’, among the main imports made by Mr and Mrs Beernaerts at the beginning of the 20th century’.
I have no other information either.
Sadko born 20/4/1909 by Novik (Golitsen) x Vedma Perchino III was bred by Prince D M Golitsen and owned by Count Buturlin in Kiev. Novik was bred at Perchino. The photo seems to be from Count Buturlin to show his dog to Mr Beernaerts. Sadko may not have traveled to Europe.
Danielle Laurent-Faure Margaret Davis The story of Sadko intrigues me... The fact that his littermate Lezgin II was imported to France. In the catalog of Moscow 1910 and Paris 1912 the name Rimsky-Korsakov is indicated (she was a stepdaughter of Dmitry Golitsyn). The name Sadko was not typical for borzois in Russia, but if you fantasize a little...
Mikhail Golitsyn's wife Sofia Karlovna was first married to Alexey Rimsky-Korsakov, who was a relative of the famous composer Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1897, there was the premiere of his famous opera "Sadko". So, it is possible that the dog's name was inspired by this opera.
There is no direct evidence that the breeder (or owner) of Sadko was Count Dmitry Alexandrovich Buturlin (attached the photo). His estate Tagancha was located 130 km from Kyiv. But there is a copy of the pedigree of the dog Parma, issued on the letterhead of the Counts Buturlin. Parma born 1908 (Oprichnik D.M.Golitsyn - Ved'ma Pershino), breeder Dmitry Golitsyn. Oprichnik's mother was Orianda Pershino, born in 1903 and presented to Dmitry Golitsyn, his father Tsepkiy Pershino was bought by him that same year.
Ved'ma Pershino, wh/grey, born 1905, was presented to Mikhail Golitsyn on October 7, 1906, when he was at hunting in Pershino.
