The Romanoff kennels

The American Romanoff kennels has been researched by and is written by Margaret Davis!

Romanoff was the name of the Russian royal family. It was established in 1630 by Michael Romanoff. Read more at, https://www.history.com/topics/russia/romanov-family

A relative of the first Michael Romanoff, Prince George M Romanoff bred borzoi in Russia in about 1880 using the Romanoff name, one of his dogs where  Abrek Romanoff

Very early kennels using the Romanoff name were set up in several western countries but also variations like Borzoi Romanov’s by Inna Y Estrinas in Russia and Romanow’s from M Schnebelis in Switzerland, illustrated by the International Champion Romanow’s Nikolai.

The first was in Holland in 1905, owned by H G Hoogenkamp. There are about 25 borzoi bred in Holland by HG Hoogenkamp in the studbook wearing the Romanoff kennel name. Several of these has survived on to modern time. Best known might be Olaf Romanoff in the pedigree of the well-known Polongai Porchai Krasnoie Selo. Find no records of borzoi bred by H G Hoogenkamp after 1921.

In 1920 a kennel using the name Romanoff was established in Canada. The owner was first Alan Paterson and then his wife, Janet Paterson. The

Canadian romanoff

Canadian Romanoff kennel was quite successful and their dogs where exhibited in both Canada and in the United States. One influential dog was Romanoff Kosloff. The first dog bred by the Paterson’s were in 1919 and the last in about 1930. The kennel was based mainly on American lines..

In 1920 LC Ware established a Romanoff kennel in Australia. There are 12 borzoi bred by LC Ware between the early 1920 and 1925 from imported English bloodlines. Have not find offspring surviving WW2,

This leads to the Romanoff kennel in the USA

In 1909 a kennel using the name Romanoff was owned by Mrs F C McAllister of Bronxville, New York.  She commenced with her foundation bitch Bronja O’ Valley Farm born 29 July 1909 by Ch Rasboi O’Valley Farm x Ch Katrinka O’ Valley Farm.  Mrs McAlllister bred four litters using the Romanoff affix and several of her dogs come down to present day.

The second kennel known as Romanoff was owned by E L Pelletier of Pontiac, Michigan.  He began with several dogs obtained from Mrs McAllister but most were sold on later.  In 1913 he obtained a male from Vladeska kennels and renamed him as Vardo of Romanoff (born 8 July 1912 by Ch Lasky x Lorraine’s Vedma).

24 April 1914

Vardo of Romanoff (Vladeska) x Kara of Romanoff (McAllister)  bred from are:

Leroy Pelletier bred 16 litters from 1914 to 1918 with several of his dogs being used by other breeders.  The following are the main dogs with continuing lines from this kennel.

The third kennel known as Romanoff was owned by Norman A Pabst of Grosse Isle, Michigan.  He obtained Ch Sorvoi of Romanoff (McAllister) from E L Pelletier plus the bitches Vedma of Romanoff (Pelletier) born 17/8/1915 and Lodhka III of Romanoff (Pelletier) born 21 Jan 1916.  Later he obtained Clontarf’s Krassai born 10 March 1916 by Ch Clontarf’s Nadmen x Clontarf’s Zahftra.  Krassai became a champion and was sold later to Mr A V Webley in Canada.

18 June 1917

Vardo of Romanoff (Vladeska) x Lodhka III of Romanoff (Pelletier)

Ch Khotni O’ Valley Farm x Zahftra of Romanoff (Pabst)

Norman Pabst appears to have dispersed his dogs early in the 1920s.  Although he was only a small breeder he produced Zahftra of Romanoff who was a significant producer in Canada and her line survives to modern dogs in both Canada and the US.  Zolota O’ Valley Farm also produced a dynasty with a line to modern dogs such as Vaski knls in Canada and Sleeping Bear, Shondar and Willowview in the US

Astor

There was another atempt to use the Romanoff kennel name. Harold Wilson imported Astor von Nordeestrand and used  the Romanoff kennel name when adverticing. Living in California he was perhaps not aware that Louis Murr already owned the name! No puppies was registered by Harold Wilson with the Romanoff name. Sue Vasick points out that Astor von Nordseestrand can be found in modern pedigrees!

The fourth kennel known as Romanoff was owned by Louis J Murr of Spring Valley, NY. In 1919 Mr Murr obtained two bitches – Lorraine’s Olga aged about 8 years born 1911 by Ch Lorraine’s Pontiac x Ch Lorraine’s Isis and a youngster about 14 months old from her previous owner.  This was Valoga bred by Valley Farm kennels born February 1918 by Owarka O’ Valley Farm x Nayada O’ Valley Farm.  Valoga had no kennel name.

There were six litters born 1923-1924 from various parents generally with only one progeny registered but they did not breed on. Other litters in later years had no further descendants and are not included in this list. The following dogs have descendants to modern days.
