John L. Kuser

John L. Kuser, the renowned brewer and automobile manufacturer, was also a breeder and exhibitor of dogs. The first litter of Borzois was born in 1899 at his Fernbrook Farm.

In 1916, he purchased Delaware Valley Farm in Titusville, New Jersey, where he employed J. Fred. Crangle as superintendent. Crangle had previously managed the kennel at Joseph Thomas’s Valley Farm. For his Delaware kennel, Kuser purchased Ch. Glontarf’s Nadmen, along with other dogs, for breeding purposes, paying $1,500 for Nadmen.
In the early 1920s, he imported dogs from Germany, eight of them being German Shepherds. In a photograph published in September 1922, he is seen posing aboard the ship that had brought him from Germany, together with a Borzoi.
As often happens, the journalists got some of the details slightly wrong here as well. The dog in the photograph is not Domino, but Bruno von Herzogschloss 356 847, whose sire was named Domino Slava./ Andrus Kozlov.
