Postcard of Nancy Morison (2 years, 2 months) and Borzoi

What does an old photograph from the Historic New England photographic collection tell us?

Mrs Horace Morison with her Borzois

Description: Date: August 1909. Postcard of Nancy Morison (2 years, 2 months) and dog, Peterborough, New Hampshire.

Nancy Morison was born in March 1907. Her parents were Horace and Arria Morison. Her mother’s name is spelled differently in various sources — Mrs. H. Morrison, Mrs. A. F. C. Morison — which has caused some confusion as to whether these references are to the same person. Her full name was Arria Frazier Cotton Moris(s)on. She married Horace Morison in Boston in 1905, and they had four children.
In 1909, at a New England Kennel Club dog show in Boston, Mrs. Horace Morison exhibited a Borzoi named Vaska O’Valley Farm,

Miss Grace de Puy Stoner

113878, born in 1907 (Ch. Sorvan OVF – Valley Farm Verina). In 1912, Mrs. Morison acquired a property named O’Terrace Hill.

In the second photograph, taken from a newspaper, Mrs. H. Morrison is standing on the left with Vaska OVF and Igraine O’Terrace Hill Farm, 185893 (Vaska O’Valley Farm – Leshie of Holmes). Igraine’s breeder was Miss Grace de Puy Stoner (in some sources written as Peyter Stoner), who is standing on the right in the photograph. The dogs shown in the photograph are Igraine’s littermates — Uher, Zilpah, and Sheila — and their dam, Leshie of Holmes. The photograph was taken at a dog show of the Ladies’ Kennel Association of Massachusetts in June 1912.
The third photograph shows Miss Grace de Puy Stoner with the Borzoi male Uther in 1913.
The following litter, sired by Vaska OVF and out of Igraine, is recorded as having been born on February 3, 1914: Douma, Petrograd, Vaska II, Nadine, Katrina, Sonia, Anesia, and Rurik Nicolai O’Terrace Hill Farm.
