Krilutt

Krilutt ( Wellesley)

Krilutt 28 177 is a Borzoi whose picture (drawn by the artist R.H. Moore) is probably the most frequently published in various publications and on the Internet. Until now, however, I had never seen a single photograph of him.

This photograph, showing him with his owner Colonel Frederick A. Wellesley, was taken in 1892 at Merton Abbey.
Krylat (that is his real name), breeder Platon Korotnev, born on April 27, 1886 (sired by Dorogoi, owned by N.A. Boldarev, and out Nagla Kartavtsev, who had been purchased for P. Korotnev’s hunt), was exhibited together with his littermates Kolpik and Kolpitsa by P. Korotnev at a show in January 1888 in Moscow. At the same exhibition, T. Stankevich showed three more of Krylat’s littermates — Demon, Daryal, and Tamara.
Of these six littermates, only Krylat received a large silver medal; the others received bronze medals or no prize at all. Another littermate, Naglets, received a small silver medal the following year and was sold to Durasov’s kennel.
At that exhibition, Krylat was bought by Dr. Scott, who later resold him to England to Colonel Frederick A. Wellesley, the younger son of the 1st Earl Cowley. F.Wellesley was a soldier and diplomat, who served as a military attaché in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the 1870s.
In the studbook, the dog is registered under the name of Mrs. Wellesley — she was Fred’s second wife, a showgirl, known by her stage name Kate Vaughan (real name Catherine Alice Candelin).
Attached Mrs. Wellesley and Krilutt — photograph from the book Menschen und Hunde vor 100 Jahren (“People and Dogs a Hundred Years Ago”).
