The Borzoi Quarterly Talks With Dr. Richard Meen and Dr. John Reeve-Newson KISHNIGA [Part III] Campbellville, Ontario, Canada This interview was conducted in July 1983 at Dick and John's home by Jocelyne Ivanovskis. Do you ever sell on terms? Dick: 99.99% of the time, it's cash. It does depend on the bitch, of course. Say someone comes to us and wants to use a stud that has not been proven. Our stud fee for an unproven male is $100 when the litter is on the ground. No matter how great the dog may be, the stud fee is $100 if it is unproven. We figure that anyone who wants to breed their bitch [...]

How long have you been in Borzoi? Dick: I purchased my first Borzoi in 1969. That's what, 14 years. My first litter was born 12 years ago in June, or 1972. Three years after you got your first Borzoi? Dick: Yes, 11 years ago, actually. The first Borzoi I got died two weeks after I got it. I then got a replacement puppy which was an outcross. John: I took one look at that puppy and knew it [...]

The Borzoi Quarterly Talks With Dr. Richard Meen and Dr. John Reeve-Newson KISHNIGA [Part II] Campbellville, Ontario, Canada This interview was conducted in July 1983 at Dick and John's home by Jocelyne Ivanovskis. What type of breeding have you found most successful in your program? Dick: We've discovered some very interesting things in linebreeding. John: Onstott gave some good advice on that. You can linebreed very extensively, but you have to be prepared to cull very extensively and be very objective. Dick: That's the joy of breeding your own show dogs. John: We were driving to the [...]

This interview was conducted for The Borzoi Quarterly in July 1983 at Dick and John's home by Jocelyne Ivanovskis. What would you consider good in terms of relationship of lengths of parts of the body? Dick: I can't tell in terms of degrees or inches, but it should look right. John: The length of the head should equal the length of the neck, give or take. Dick: But we never measure, as such. It's like when you go to a fashion show, and someone comes out and something's not right you might not know what it is, exactly, but it's wrong. How much emphasis would you give the head on a scale of ten [...]

The Borzoi In Western Europe Part I By Ursula-Vera Trueb, Malleray [Switzerland] Translated from "Der Windhundfreund"#131, February 1983 by Jean Vandongen Germany, The Netherlands, England and France were the first countries of Western Europe to be interested in the Borzoi. Now and then, a few representatives of the breed had found their way to the West, the first imports going back to the 16th century. In most cases, they were royal presents or had been brought by merchants and travelers coming back from Russia. But it was only at the end of the 19th century that the breed met with rapidly [...]

The Borzoi In Western Europe Part II By Ursula-Vera Trueb, Malleray [Switzerland] Translated from "Der Windhundfreund"#131, February 1983 by Jean Vandongen In 1909, another line was added to all the fine imports into Germany that in the beginning was hardly noticed, yet it was destined to give the entire breeding of borzoi a new rise. Unfortunately, it was also destined to be the cause of a controversy which lasted for decades. One of the last imports before World War I was a certain Vigow von der Moritzburg from Kiev, father and mother unknown. The whole appearance of this male was proof that [...]
