Finland’s Borzoi history started in 1892, when the chairman of the Finnish Kennel Club imported a bitch, Lastotschka, deriving from The Tsars Gatchina kennel. Lastotschka, owner Kanninen was shown Helsinki 1896 .

Same year two Borzois were registered in the Finnish Studbook, Lord & Lady. Both were shown in Helsinki 1896 by owner by H Blankett, parents were unknown. About the male Lord one can find this in the Swedish Kennel club magazine. Quote: “Special attention was aroused by Lord, owned by Heinrich Blankett, Hangö, breed at Pitkäranta Yard. He was a lovely animal, at least one and a half bigger than the dog-yard Borzois one can see in the streets of Stockholm, but still nice and friendly”. Breeder of  Lord & Lady was mr H. Ericsson, Pitkäranta.

Mr J R Johansson imported and bred Borzois in Helsinkii early 1900s.

Lady

During the years several Borzois came in from the SovietUnion. In the thirties a dog and a bitch, Uslad and Jorza, were imported. They bred two litters in 1933 and 1934. Also a German bitch, Felizia von Nordseestrand, gave birth to some litters in the Rednalo kennel, but the breed disappeared in Finland during World War II.

This lovely story about the

Grandma and her Borzoi Tytti.

difficulties during World War II was told by Seija Pekkarinen: The dog in the photos was named Tytti, a female and was owned by my grandmother Tyyne and grandfather Erik Ojala. When the photos were taken, the family was living in Karelian Käkisalmi (Kexholm in Swedish) in what was then Finland, today Russia. Grandma managed to exhibit Tytti at a few dog shows until the war came in between. The dog Tytti and her family were involved in two evacuations, the first in the fall of 1939 when the Winter War broke out and the second time in the summer of 1944 when the Continuation War broke out. At that time, you only had a few hours to escape and the dog was the only animal Grandma was allowed to take with you, all other animals were to be left behind. The family with the dog settled and built a house in Oulu County (Finland).

Tytti and the male Borzoi

Tytti never had any puppies. I was told that Grandma had brought home a breeding male that would live with them for a while, but during a dinner, Grandpa had reached out to pet his own dog but was instead badly bitten on the hand by the potential breeding male. Then Grandpa decided that one dog in the house was enough and so it was. This is what I know and that Tytti was a dear family member. /Seija Pekkarinen

In 1946, “av Moccambo”  kennel, owner E Eskola imported three Borzoi from Sweden, Ch. Bonnens Fedja plus a son of him, Bojar, and a bitch named Kicki. Also a bitch from Norway, Ditte. Ch. Bojar and Ch. Kicki gained their titles in Finland and were bred, this producing two champions, Gisela and Maritsa av Moccambo, born 1949 A repeat breeding was done the year after, but unfortunately, the Eskolas stopped breeding after this. A. Ahoma owned Mariza av Moccambo and had a litter after her, bred to Eskolas Bojar. Two puppies registered and one, Ch Zary, moved to Sweden.

They also imported another bitch, Metschta, who had two litters with Udaloi in ’64 and ’65. In the first litter came Ch Amurat, he sired a litter for kennel Oseroff.

In the second, the very influential Nikita (Järviö) appeared. He was exported to Ursula von Trueb, kennel de Norois, Switzerland, and sired six litters, among them three for de Norois. Several of his offspring continued the line.

 President Kekkonen

Worth to mention here is the President of Finland, Urho Kekkonen, a man that was highly regarded both in Finland and in the USSR. He was given several Borzois from Russia. Most known is perhaps Ch Leo, together with a daughter of Ludmila, Zoja, they appear in pedigrees in Finland, England, USA and South Africa (Immerwach Nadja of Bacaret)

Caljuschka von Karagunda

 Vasaravuoren

1961 was the start for Leena Harrivaaras Vasaravuoren kennel when importing Caljuschka von Karagunda from Germany. She had a litter with Ch. Udaloi in 1962 producing among else  Ch V, Anastasia and also the influential Vasaravuoren Argo, father of the C- and F-litter at his home kennel. The same year, Vasaravuoren imported the Swiss bitch, Iaga de Norois, who had three litters,  with Vasaravuoren Argo (Udaloi x Galjuschka) . Alexis of Swanlake (Malora lines), and a Swiss mother, Assunta is Slonowaja.

Int Ch Vasaravuoren Emira

Vasaravuoren C-litter had two Ch-s, with Castro as the most influential. He became father of  E-litter with the two highly influential Ch-s Enrico, who was an outstanding Borzoi at the racing-track, and Int Ch Vasaravuoren Emira, foundation for kennel Korotai. The F-litter was out of Argo-Iaga de Norois and gave the very influential Farida, (mother of  Anja Viitalas Z-litter) Felicita (foundation for Golden West kennel) & Fleurette (Amu-Darjan kennel)

Int Ch Vasaravuoren Felicita

Vasaravuoren had their last litter in 1970, breeding Arojen Assi, daugher of Vasaravuoren Assunta, to Caesar of Golden West.  Two of the bitches continued the line. Ch Korotai Krasivaja Antoniina

Int. Ch. Vasaravuoren Emira, was the foundation bitch for Ritva Reimans (later Miettinen) Korotai kennel. Emira was bred to Int. Ch. Ekhaga Nikolaus and this produced Int Ch Korotai Krasivy Arkaad, Nordic Ch. Korotai Krasivy Aleksei, important stud for kennel Tzar in Sweden, and also Korotai Krasivya Antoniina, first owned by Falconcrag in England and later by Margaret Davis, Australia, where she became Australian Ch and foundation for kennel Russkimir. In kennel Korotai’s second litter Ch Daragoj Wascha was used and four bitches were born, 3 Ch-s. The G-litter (Metsänreunan Amor-Korotai Devyschka) at Korotai gave two Ch-s Gregor and Grigori, the later sired litters for Margiitan and Metsänreunan. A sister, Korotai Glafira was exported to  Harry Russells kennel Svetlanov, Australia. She became foundation for the kennel and had three litters. One of them, bred to Margaret Davis Russkimir Ermolenka was actually a tight linebreeding back to kennel Korotai. The great winning MBiSS Aust Ch Svetlanov Bitter Sweet was one from this litter. In 1991 Kennel Korotai had their last O-litter using the same combination as for the N-litter (Korotai Krasivyi Lyckor-Korotai Katinka) these two litters had in all 16 pups, three that became Ch-s but only one of them continued in breeding, Ch Korotai Krasivaja Nevena. She became foundation for kennel Tarijemiran.

Kennel Korotai bred in all 14 litters between 1968-1991.

                                                          Golden West

Golden-West borzoi,Left to right: Fin Ch Casanova, Int Scand Ch Carlos, Vasaravuoren Felicita, Swed Ch Dmitri, Calinka and Int Scand Ch Danja

Ch Dimitri of Golden West

Aili Porvali’s Golden West kennel started in 1967 with  Vasaravuoren Felicita bred to Int. Ch. Igorof larnac. It was the C-litter, containing among else Int Ch Czarina of G. W. She had four litters in her home kennel. Also Int Ch Carlos of G. W. played a large roll for the future siring three litters at kennel Bolshoi.

The D-litter was a repeat breeding to Iarnac, a litter with an equally great importance for Nordic Borzoi breeding. Ch Dimitri of Golden West was exported to kennel DonCosacken, he sired two small litters for them, and breed to Sundhems Dajanka produced Nord Ch DonCosackens Erina, foundation for Norwegian kennel Borsjana’s. He also sired a (small) litter at kennel Majorow’s containing the likewise very impotant Ch Majorow’s Alekseev-Majorow. Ch Donskoi of G. W. sired 6 litters among them one for kennel Metsänreunan in which the equally great sire Metsänreunan Amor was born .

Int Ch Hozajn of Golden West (Leo-Faima of Golden-West)

For the F-litter Vasaravuoren Felicita were bred to Frimodts Frappant. Three puppies only. One of the bitches, Int Ch G. W. Faima were used for Golden Wests H-litter, and the other Nord Ch Fanka for the J-& K-litter. The male Fargo of Golden West were exported to Kennel LeiCro. For Golden Wests G-litter Czarina of G. W. was bred to Ch Leo (Kekkonen) this produced some very influential Borzois. Gastjowdak of Golden-West sired four litters, one for Oak-Backwood and three for Golden West. Gaja of Golden West had one litter but in that breeding, Nord Ch Etkakatjusha were born. She was owned by Kaija Kravik (Mononen) and became foundation for her kennel Barsajas, Sweden. Ch Barsajas Irina & Kalina is behind many  succesful Yablonaja’s. Gusarik of G. W. sired one litter in Swedish kennel Carat.

Ch Otnetina of Golden West (Metsänreunan Amor-Kira of Golden-West)

The U & W-litter (Sopernik of Golden-West-Ljuba of Golden-West) born in 1980-81 seems to be the last from Aili Porvalis Golden West kennel. None from these two litters  bred on. However, her grand-daughter Nina Peedu (Porvali) with great succes restarted Golden West in 2006, but thats another story,,

Int Ch Metsänreunan Amor (Donskoi Of Golden-West-Amu-Darjan Dolja)

Ch Amu-Darjan Dolja & Tzars Galina, foundation bitches for Metsänreunan

Aini Kastinens Metsänreunan kennel started in 1971 with a mix of Vasaravuoren F-litter with Swedish Ekhaga/Igorof and produced the highly influential sire Int. Ch Metsänreunan Amor. He sired 15 litters containing 71 puppies.

Nord Ch Metsänreunan Ilja

Metsänreunan continued with swedish lines, importing Ch Tzars Galina (Ekhaga Nikolaus-Olagus Almaska-Bolshahia) She had three litter for Metsänreunan, with Nord Ch Metsänreunan Ilja as the most succesful but also Ch Metsänreunan Dotska came to have influence for the future. She first had a litter in her home kennel with Daragoj Majcob, in which Metsänreunan Larisa continued the line. However Dotska’s greatest influence came in her second litter, born 1979. she then had been sold and produced a litter (without kennel name). Here came Ch Milaja, purchased by Margit Räty, she became foundation for her Margiitan kennel.

Ch Metsänreunan Figaro going BIS at a National Speciality

Ch Metsänreunan Volga (Metsånreunan Ilja-Metsänreunan Pavlova)

Aini Kastinen kept on breeding for many years. Her F-litter in 1984 (Metsänreunan did not breed  in alphabetical order) was sired by swedish Int Ch Tovarisjtj’s Jewel and contained among else Ch Metsänreunan Figaro, and  also Metsänreunan  Fiija whom continued the kennelname with two litters. In 1993, a son of her, Metsänreunan Tartar sired another T-litter, the last at Metsänreunan. One from that litter, Metsänreunan Tilhi bred on for kennel Mishan,

                                                                    Daragoj

Int Ch Kara-Kyralina de Norois

Ch Daragoj Jelena

I dont think its wrong to say that Eeva Heinos (Resko) kennel Daragoj, followed in the footprints of kennel Vasaravuoren, using de Norois bloodlines. Eeva bred her import Int Ch Kara-Kyralina de Norois to Ch Vasaravuren Castro, there by linebreeding on the de Norois I-ltter.

Ch Daragoj Wascha

This gave among else Ch Daragoj Jelena. For the next litter another import, Ch Roxane, (bred by Charlotte Zabel, kennel vom Bergland, but for some reason registered without kennel name) was bred to Ch Vasaravuoren Enrico.

Ch Roxane (vom Bergland)

Daragoj Miranda of Sirhan

This produced two Ch-s Daragoj Wascha, who sired 5 litters, three in Finland for kennels Korotai, Amu-Darjan and Daragoj, two in Sweden, one for Ylva Stiglen and the other for Leicro. (containing Ch Leicros Zandor, Zmirnoff and Zilla) The W-litter also hold Daragoj Weruschka, foundation for succesful kennel Bolshoi and Daragoj Wanjuscha, exported to kennel Olagus in Sweden. For her last Borzoi litter Eeva Heino (Resko) breed Daragoj Wascha to Kara-Kyralina de Norios producing two influentials. One of them, Daragoj Majcob were sold to Sirkka-Liisa Nyssönnen, kennel Shamaanin. He sired 5 litters, four at Shamaanin and one for Metsänreunan. Majcobs sister Daragoj Miranda of Sirhan, went, as her name implies, to Audrey Benbows Sirhan kennel in Canada, where she had one litter, producing among else Ch Sirhan Mirage. After this breeding kennel Daragoj concentrated on an enormously successful breeding of Beagles. Eeva Resko is also a most respected judge on different breeds, among them Borzoi.

                                                             Bolshoi

Daragoj Weruschka

As mentioned above, Marjatta Männikös kennel Bolskoi started the breeding 1971, mating their Swedsih import Tzars Gaschenka to Vasaravuoren Enrico, only two puppies, one became Ch, Bolshoi Irina, Same year Daragoj Weruschka was bred to Carlos of Golden West. Weruschka had four litters at Bolshoi, and the B-litter was extremely influential.

Int Ch Bolshoi Bamse

Ch Bolshoi Bolshaia

It produced among else the very popular stud  Int Ch Bolshoi Bamse, siring 16! litters, 9 in Finland, 7 in Sweden. Many of his offspring continued his line. Just to mention a few, Nord Ch Malenkij of Golden West, (he sired among else a litter for kennel Burjan) & his older sister Int Ch Kira of Golden West, (she had two large litters for G. W.) Also to mention the foundation for Swedish kennel Yablonaja, Ch Barsaja’s Irina (four litters for Yablonaja) and Barsaja’s Kalina, mother of wellknown (and much used) Int Ch Yablonaja Boleck.

Ch Bolshoi Bolshaia & Int Ch Bolshoi Step

Int Ch Bolshoi Step

Three of the bitches in the B-litter were also bred, Ch Bolshaia & Ballerina for Bolshoi, and Ch Bolshoi Ballet, who had four litters at kennel Margiitan. Bolshoi then bred Weruschka to Swiss import Int Ch Asmodei Romanow,  producing one Ch. In 1977 Bolshoi Ballerina was bred to litterbrother Bamse, producing among else Int Ch Bolshoi Step.

Same year, Bolshois last litter were born. A mating between two from their first two litters in 1971, as Ch Bolshoi Irina were bred Bolshoi Bamse. Four puppies were born, with one working Ch, WCH Bolshoi Tiffany. I cant find any further trace of these two litters in future pedigrees. Kennel Bolshoi was active between 1971-77.

Amu-Darjan

Ch Vasaravuoren Fleurette

Kennel Amu-Darjan started in 1967, when Meeri Arnio mated her Ch Vasaravuoren Fleurette to Int Ch Ekhaga Nicolaus. The litter was born in January 1968. There were at least three pups born and two of them became Ch-s, Amu-Darjan Aleksander and A-D Anniina.

Ch Amu-Darjan Alexander

Anniina later had a litter at her home kennel. The breeding between Nicolaus and Fleurette were repeated in 1969. Four puppies born, two of them became very influential for Finnish Borzoi breeding.

Ch Amu-Darjan Darja as foundation for the Polongain kennel and Ch Amu-Darjas Dolja foundation for Metsänreunan. In 1971, A-D Anniina from the first litter was bred to Ch Daragoj Wascha. Again  a litter of four, also with two that became very important for two other kennels. Amu-Darjan Natasha as foundation for Shamaanin and A-D Nikita siring 6 litters with 3 different partners, all litters without kennel name.

Amu-Darjan Anniina, A-D Antar & Vasaravuoren Fleurette

One of his offspring, Int Ch EtkaKatjusha, was foundation for Swedish kennel Barsaja’s and through her daughters Irina and Kalina, both at Yablonaja, Amu-Darjan Nikita can be found behind modern Borzois.

                                                                                  Oak-Backwood

Kerttu Itkonen started her Oak-Backwood kennel in 1971 breeding her Int Ch Danja of Golden West to Ch Shalako of Matalona, english import to swedish kennel Igorof.

Int Ch Troika of Oak-Backwood

Ch Ostra of Oak-Backwood

Int Ch Anatol of Oak-Backwood

This first litter had two Ch-s, and Int Ch Troika of Oak-Backwood stayed in the kennel. The combination Shalako-Danja was repeated in 1974, resulting  in one Ch. Troika had a litter in 1975, bred to Gastjowdak of Golden-West. This gave two male  Ch-s, but it was Natalie of Oak-Backwood that carried on the line, having one litter bred to Metsänreunan Amor, one Ch in this H-litter, but none were used for further breeding.  Danja of Golden West had her third and final  litter in 1976, this time breed to Int Ch Metsänreunan Amor. Two Ch-s, and Ch Zinja of Oak-Backwood remained with her breeder. Zinja had one litter in 1978, also bred to Metsänreunan Amor, The O-litter contained Ch Ostra of Oak-Backwood and she carried on the line in 1981, beeing bred to swedish Int Ch Majorow’s Charlamow. This A-litter contained among others Int Ch Anatol of Oak-Backwood who sired three litters, one of the for kennel Metsänreunan. The breding was done by Kerttus husband Erkki? Itkonen, as Kerttu had passed away at a too early age. It was as far as I can see, the last litter for Oak-Backwood in a period between 1971-81.

                                                                     Polongain

Ch Amu-Darjan Darja

Marita & Harri Tuominens Polongain kennel were active for quite a long time. They started in 1972 with a bitch named Amu Darjan Darja (Ekhaga Nikolaus x Vasaravuoren Fleurette) and bred her to the Dutch import, O’Klavrok van Troybiko, producing the top winning Int. Ch Polongain Akaasia.

Int Ch Polongain Akaasia

Int Ch Polongain Carenina

Ch Polongain Cosip

Int Ch Polongain Efrosina

She had but one litter, at kennel Akaasian. Seems that none in this A- litter did continue for Polongain. Next Borzoi litter came 1976. It was the C-litter (Kaznan Dugin-Samantha) with quite a different background compared to the first litter. Int Ch Polongain Carenina became Top Show Borzoi Finland 1978 and had three litters in her home kennel, the G-, H- & J-litters. Also Ch Polongain Cosip had a nice show & stud career, siring 5 litters. For the D- and E-litter kennel Kaznans Swiss import Int Ch Romanows Nikolai mated Amu-Darjan Darja for her third and fourth (final) litters. Three Ch-s in the D- and one, IntCh Polongain Efrosina, in the E-litter. Efrosina became vital in Polongains continued breeding as mother of the F-, I- and K-litter. She was bred to Polongain Cosip for the F-litter producing extremely important Int Ch Polongain Fjor. Fjor sired 13 litters, 12 in Finland and one in Sweden, for kennel Zchatsaj’s A-litter. The G-litter had one Ch. Polongain Galina, foundation for Kennel Hatsina in 1984. Polongains J-litter had three Ch-s, among them the very influential Nord Ch Polongain Jura, exported to kennel Zchatsaj’s in Sweden. Jura sired five litters, one in Finland for Polongain, and four in Sweden.

Nordic Ch Polongain Jura

Ch Zchatsaj’s Angelowa

Ch Polongain Hubert

The two litters for kennel Timirinja’s were extremely successful, in all nine Ch-s, many very influential for the future. Timirinja’s Birkowitch for example sired 13 litters in four different countries, Sweden, Norway, USA & Japan. Litterbrother Int Ch Timirinja’s Birik Czarinjin sired 8 litters, most of them in Finland but also one in Sweden. For the H-litter, Swedish Ch Majorows Garinjin was used, producing three Ch-s. Zchatsa’s Angelowa was brought in from Sweden, having a mother from kennel Leicros, new English/American lines were introduced. She was first bred to Akaasian Tshizh, who had Polongain background.

Her second and last litter was to Polongain Hubert, a son of Majorows Garinjin.  By this time Polongain had established close connections to swedish Chicki Runnqvists kennel Zchatsaj’s, and for their next Polongain-litter, Chickis Canadian import Bherov’s Dostoevsky were used. This resulted in one Ch, Polongain Tarkhan.

Ch Polongain Alusha

Around 1990 a bitch from Russia, Juliana was imported. Bred to Ch Timirinja’s Birik Czarinjin she produced among else the succesful Polongain Alusha, both Show and Lurecoursing Ch. A rather unique bitch as she produced three litters for three different owners, Polongain, Zimistraija and one for Hanna Ojuri. For the Z-litter Polongain used Rainmakers Another Dream, with pure Margiitan parents. One Ch, Polongain Zimbalist, that went as studfee to kennel Rainmakers.  Polongain then bred  Polongain Alusha to Zimbalist to produce their second D-litter.

Us Ch Polongain Divenskaja

Ch Phaedra Polongain Regina

One in this litter Polongain Divenskaja went to US-kennel Phaedra and became US-Ch. Later Polongain brought back a puppy from her, Ch Phaedra Polongain Regina. Polongain started breeding in 1972 and had their last litter in 2011, 215 puppies in 39 years of breeding.

                                                                        Immerwach

Zoja (Klyon-Ludmila (Kekkonen)

Immerwach Nadja of Bacaret (Leo-Zoja)

Zomahli Otrala

Inger Westerlunds kennel Immerwach deserves mentioning although its  showresults weren’t that impressive. Inger, however was a well respected Sighthound judge. She bred three litters. For  the first, born in 1977, two Russian imports were used. Ch Leo (Kekkonen) was bred to Zoja. Immerwach Nadja of Bacaret came from this combination. As her name implies, she was exported to Barbara Longs kennel Bacaret in England, where she had two litters bred to Ch Bacaret Lord Supertramp. These lines can be found behind Borzois both in UK, (Zoribo, Tazeb etc), USA (Windhound, Insights, Avalon) South Africa (Bacaret, Roshga). Bacaret Lebed went back to Finland and had the third and final litter for Immerwach’s, bred to Ch Burjan Red Rudolf. One from this litter came to Johanna Hellgrens Hatsina kennel, but that line didn’t continue. Inger also imported Zomahli Otrala from UK. Otrala was bred to Polongain Feisal for Immerwachs second litter, none from this litter were used for further breeding.

                                                                              Kaznan

Romanow’s Marosch

Vappu & Pertti Vuorenmaa started their Kaznan kennel in  1973 using the letter C for naming their first litter.  Kaznan did run its own quarantine and  thereby had the possibility to import more easily than any other breeder in the Nordic countries. (Except for in Denmark, that had open borders to the rest of Europe). Their two first imports, used for the initial litter both came from Switzerland, Romanow’s Marosch & Int Ch Ugra is Slonowaja. Three puppies born, and two became Ch-s. Ugra had only this one litter, but Marosch, although not gaining a title, was used for six litters. Two at Kaznan, two for Korotai, and one at Metsänreunan. The sixth litter was without kennelname, and one in this litter, Ch Analiina, through her daughter Chinchilla, came to influence in Norwegian kennel Fiva’s. For the second litter Marosch was bred to Ch Romanow’s Natascha. This litter became quite influnetial through the two Int Ch-s Dugin, siring the C-litter for Polongain, and Dufjek with three litters in Norway, för Al-Wintar, Kazar and Borsjana’s. The Kazan E-litter, born in 1975, yet another import, Ch Werskoj vom Dom mated Ch Kaznan Czaris, a litter of nine pups, three Int Ch-s and one SF Ch. Following from E-litter came to have influence in Finland and Sweden. Int Ch Kaznan Eriskow sired three litters in Finland for Kaznan, Burjan & Margiitan. Ch Kaznan Emmerich was used for one litter at Kaznan, Int Ch Kaznan Erraskai sired two litters at Kaznan. Two of the bitches were exported to Sweden, Int Ch Kaznan Eskaja had one litter at Carat’s & Kaznan Ewenka gave birth to one at Helenetorps.

They have built their kennel on such names as Ch. Werskoi v Dom, Int. Ch. Ugra is Slonowaja, Mumtaz Mahals Patrinka and the Swiss Romanows Marosch, Nikolai and Natasha. These imports carried the best bloodlines of the continent, and have been used with excellent results on the Kaznan kennel. The Kaznan kennel has produced numerous International and National Champions, all bred from imported bloodlines of the European continent.

At this time, the late 1960s a very meritated English Borzoi is imported to Finland, Gb Ch Keepers Michael Angelo. He becomes very influential, especially in Russia, through his son Alan Mikhailovitch (Lipponen) Breeder of Zaida and her litter brother Zorbas (who also went on having several litters, owner me) was Anja Viitala. As far as I know she had no more litters.

ZANJA [b] Finland. b. Anja Viitala, dob: 4/10/1970. Zoltan Springinsfeld ex Vasaravuoren Farida. She was exported to Sweden, where she produced 1 litter.

Vertrago Breeder is Ulla Sutinen She had 3 litters, all to von Vertrago kennel. 1971 & 1972 she had litter with Fin Ch Leo (president Kekkonen’s male) there were 6 puppies in first litter and 3 in the second one. In 1973 she had litter of one male with her son Faruccio von Vertrago. That was all the borzoi litter that this kennel ever had. Two of the puppies became Fi Ch. 5 had litters: Flaggia 1, Flamenta2, Filippo 1, Feodorovaa 2, Farucco 2. Flamenta can still be found behind Finnish lines.

Feodorovna von Vertrago appears to have been a lovely representative of the breeding program there. She was owned by L Tuhkanen, whelped August 23, 1971, and was a typey black and white bitch with tan points. Her sire was Leo, a Russian import to Finland, and her dam was the English import, Zomahli Harasho. She produced two litters, the first in 1973 with Romanow’s Nikolai with son Tuhkiala Kasakka breeding on, and the second in 1976 with Rodgivad Cabellero, with daughter Tuhkiala Veisu breeding on.

I should know this but I can’t recall the person’s name who had the kennel Millan and bred a litter from Flamenta there.
From this litter Millan Anastasia became the foundation bitch in kennel Taivalkuohun.

The Margiitan kennel has produced some nice stock, the most known is Int. Ch Margiitan Tiritomba (Metsänreunan Amor x Bolshoi Ballet).

Fatisa

The Shaamanin kennel has both imported from, Ch Tsad, and exported several Borzois to Russia. They have also breed the perhaps most successful Finnish Show Borzoi so far, Int. Ch. Shaamanin Tsara, World winner in Bern and with several other wins on the European continent. Tsara is out of the Soviet import, Tsad-Shaamanin Fatisa.

Minna Saarikko in Finland, Finnish and Estonian Ch. Ilanja’s Darbaschan was an irish marked red dog bred by Eeva-Sinikka Walden of Ilanja kennel. He was born July 24, 1990 and had a pedigree that was basically German ex Dutch breeding. His sire was the Dutch import [by a German sire], Vladimier van Troybhiko, and his dam Kaznan Walenka, though bred in Finland, was also of German and Dutch lines. Darbaschan sired no litters, but his sister Demjana certainly carried on the bloodline. He unfortunately died young at about 6-1/2 years of age.

There is, however, one outstanding Finnish kennel if one is counting show results. The Kaznan kennel has produced numerous International and National Champions, all bred from imported bloodlines of the European continent.

Kaznan runs its own quarantine and has thereby the possibility to import more easily than others. They have until today,1984,finished 11 Int. Ch. and 29 Nat. Chs. out of 14 litters within all 95 pups.

There are quite a few more Scandinavian kennels than mentioned in this article, but I think it has given a brief picture of appearing bloodlines and important kennels. The main purpose of the article was to describe the way of the Swedish Borzoi from Ramsden x Russia to our modern day Borzoi. (1984)
