Engels

Engels

During its twenty years of its existence, the kennel has handed over a large number of puppies and young borzois to hunters in the region. However, hunters do not keep the borzoi breed clean. Nevertheless, the role of the Engels kennel as an improver of the local borzois is enormous. If it were not for the admixture of the blood of the kennel borzoi to the local dogs, they would become incapable of catching an animal, especially hares. The kennel, located a few kilometers south of Engels, has a large yard and five spacious dog enclosures. It has appropriate premises for grown borzoi and for puppies, for sick dogs, a kitchen and other auxiliary buildings. In short, the arrangement of the kennel is quite appropriate for its purpose.  At present, the kennel is not numerous: Grozny, born 1948-05-17 from Gordy and Krylatka; Vikhr, born 1954-08-7 from Grozny and Veselka; Gordy, born 7/VHI – 1955 from Grozny and Bystra; Shalost, born 13/111 – 1952 from Korotai and Shilka; Karera, born 28/1V – 1949 from Korotai and Kometa; Vikhr, born 22/11 – 1952 from Grozny and Veselka; Tcharodeika, born 16/111 – 1952 from Korotai and Tchara; Veselka, born 16/VI – 1947 from Daur and Molva. If we discount Veselka, which should be removed from the kennel due to old age, as well as Karera, which does not bring puppies, it turns out that the entire productive livestock of the kennel consists of three males and the same number of females, extremely few! 7 puppies were born in 1956 (6 females and 1 male) and the same number of puppies born in 1957 were left for the repair of the livestock. This small number of dogs of the kennel should be protected as the apple of the eye, since there are almost no purebred borzois left in our country of the old bloodlines. Pitiful remnants of this breed are numbered in a few in Moscow, Saratov, Kuibyshev and in rare cases are found in other regions. As can be seen from the above list of dogs, all of them (except for Veselka, who has lost the ability to produce offspring) are in close inbreeding and are descended from Korotai or his nephew Grozny (the mother of the Krylatka is a littermate Korotay). The small number of livestock of the kennel and close kinship is the main disadvantage in the activities of the kennel.

In 1958, the kennel Engels and Saratov was closed and the dogs sold. 5 adult bitches (Schaloste, Metel, Groza, Volga, Raketa) and 12 puppies were taken to Leningrad. These dogs became the basis of the borzoi breed in Leningrad.
