GRAND DUKE MICHAEL ALEXANDROVICH

Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich secretly entered with Natalia into a morganatic marriage in Vienna on October 30 (17), 1912 , having married in the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Sawa.

Upon learning of the marriage of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, Emperor Nicholas II wrote to the mother of Empress Maria Feodorovna: “<…> Unfortunately, between me and him now it’s over, because he broke his word. How many times he himself told me, I did not ask him, but he himself promised that he would not marry her. And I believed him unlimitedly! What makes me especially indignant is his reference to the illness of poor Alexei, who made him hurry with this reckless step! He does not care about your grief, nor for our grief, nor for the scandal, which this event will make in Russia. And at a time when everyone is talking about the war, a few months before the anniversary of the House of the Romanovs!! It becomes a shame and hard. I also had the first idea to hide this news, but reading his letter two or three times, I realized that now he can not come to Russia. <…> »

As a result, Mikhail was dismissed from all posts, he was forbidden to return to Russia, and he lived with his wife in Europe.
